Keeping Active

Statistics show that as we get older, we move less.   As we age we drift away from exercise – at a time when it’s especially crucial that momentum is maintained.

People often confuse lack of fitness for the signs of ‘getting on’ and enter an activity slowdown. It might seem like the natural thing to do, but putting your feet up in later life may put you on the slippery slope leading to dependency and ill health.

The message is simple- keep moving!

By taking part in regular physical activity, you'll benefit from the following:

  Improved heart/lung function
  Maintain healthy weight
  Strengthened muscles and bones
  Improved flexibility, balance and coordination
  Maintain mobility and independence
  Reduced stress, improved sleep
  Sense of achievement

How much exercise do we need?

Half-hour blocks of exercise once or twice a week will maintain our independence
Just two and a half hours of moderate exercise a week will keep us in the best of health.

In addition, we all need at least an hour a day of pottering about in our own homes and gardens, and ideally walking to the shops, to maintain a basic level of fitness.

In Carmarthenshire we have schemes to get older people interested in exercise such as:

Step with Confidence - Specialist exercise for older people, aiming to help you stay steady on your feet, stay strong and feel confident.
For more information ring 01554 747500.

Vitality – The Vitality scheme is seeking to reduce number of adults that are at risk of being affected by Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). Through partnership working with GP practices and health professionals, we are able to specifically target individuals with two or more risk factors of CHD and support them through a programme of appropriate, supervised and enjoyable exercise.

Your doctor will know if you are eligible to access the scheme, so the first step is to ask/discuss with your GP whether a referral would be appropriate for you.

If you are over 60 you can swim for free at all five of Carmarthenshire County Council’s swimming pools.  They are Llanelli Leisure Centre, Carmarthen Leisure Centre, Amman Valley Leisure Centre, Llandovery Swimming Complex or Newcastle Emlyn Swimming Complex.  You will need to register and provide proof of age to receive a membership card and swim dependant on programme
